A Pewter Soup Plate by Townsend & Compton - SOLD
This fine condition pewter soup plate was made by the firm of Townsend and Compton circa 1784-1806. The partnership was John Townsend and his son-in-law, Thomas Compton. Townsend's daughter, Mary I suspect likely knew the trade as well as any of her male family members.
The Townsends and their partnerships undoubtedly had the greatest market share of export pewter to the Colonies and later the United States.
This plate measures 8 3/8". The hammered booge is beautifully done and the marks are strong and well struck.
We have another identical plate listed that is essentially mint. This is not quite as nice and is highly affordable.
