A Very Fine Townsend & Compton Pewter Basin - SOLD
Townsend & Compton were major exporters to America. Part to the Townsend Dynasty of Pewterers who were responsible for what is undoubtedly the greatest quantities of pewter sent to America from England. The Dynasty was active from 1748 through the first part of the 19th century.
Basins generally saw heavy use as they are a practical form and could be used for mixing or serving food and well as a bowl for eating. To find one in as nice a condition as this example is uncommon.
This bowl is 8" in diameter and is beautifully hammered and the touchmark on the outside bottom is well struck. If you are working on a "stack" of English Pewter Export basins, this will be hard to improve upon. (ON HOLD)
