This carbine socket was designed to hold the barrel of a trooper's carbine snugly while riding on his mount. This carbine socket was attached by the strap to a "D" ring on the left of the saddle above the stirrup. The trooper inserted the barrel of his carbine into this socket and thus the carbine didn't flail about while he and his horse were in motion.
This is one Civil War Cavalry Accessory that is still modestly priced.
