American Pewter > Teapots, Coffeepots, Pitchers & Sugar Bowls
A Very Fine 2 Quart Water Pitcher by Freeman Porter - SOLD
This 2 quart pewter water pitcher was a product of the shop of Freeman Porter of Westbrook, Maine who operated his firm from 1835 until 1865 producing teapots, coffeepots, lamps, candlesticks, and pitchers.
Water pitchers like this usually saw heavy use as it is a very practical form for serving water, iced tea, and other beverages. They are generally found exhibiting this heavy use. As pewter fell out of usage, many of these water pitchers ended up being used as flower vases. The acidity of the flowers coupled with the acrid water, destroyed many a water pitcher as far as collectors are concerned. The flower vase use caused heavy interior pitting.
This example has only a few sporadic pits on the inside. The handle still exhibits scrape marks from the finishing process. The touchmark is perfectly struck. This piece measures 6 3/8" to the lip.
