A Very Rare Late 18th Century New York Plate - SOLD
We are pleased to offer this late 18th century 8 5/8” single reed rim pewter plate by Ebenezer Crossman of Hudson, NY c-1790-1800. The eagle used in his touchmark, closely resembles the eagles found of 1787 Massachusetts Large Cents indicating that his die was produced sometime after that date.
In near mint condition this is one of a very few examples known of this man’s work. The metal is of high quality and the lathe work is fine as well. This plate has a very few slight blemishes. The touchmarks are mint “as struck”.
Of note are some casting defects on the back edge of a section of the rim. This in not pitting but an area of the casting where the molten metal didn’t completely fill the mold.
Crossman was born in Taunton, MA in 1768; Laughlin believes he learned his trade in Rhode Island. With the British harassing whaling during in the Revolutionary War years, a group of persons moved to Hudson and turned a farming community into a small city.
Crossman likely moved here at that time. No records have been found pertaining to his occupation as a pewterer. One example of the plates marked by him shows the lower wording on his touchmark. HUDSON is plain to see.
Family records on a genealogical web site show that he and his wife, Polly Davis, were married in 1792.
A fine addition to any collection of American Pewter Flatware.
