A Superb Quart Pewter Mug by Jacob Whitmore with Outstanding Provenance - SOLD
This wonderful condition Jacob Whitmore pewter mug came from the collection of Ledlie Irwin Laughlin, author of Pewter in America, it's Makers and Their Marks, A three volume set considered to be the defining work on American Pewter.
This piece was sold years ago by T.D. & C.R. Williams Antiques. Labels were printed by the Williams to denote items from this important collection. This still has that label present.
This mug is of quart capacity. It measures 5 15/16" tall to the lip, with a base diameter of 4 7/8" and a top diameter of 4 1/8"
This mug is as fine as any 18th century Connecticut mug I have ever had. The body clearly shows the lathe turn marks on the inside. The handle shows the hand scraped finish marks. The lathe marks on the underside of the base are very sharp and clear. The touchmark is mint as struck meaning there was never any more showing and there is no wear to the touch. To find a mug by this maker in any finer condition would be a tall order to fill.
Whitmore worked in Middletown, Connecticut from 1757-1790
