Quart Pewter Flat Lid Tankard by Henry Will of New York
Quart Flat Lid Pewter Tankard by Henry Will. Henry worked in New York City from 1761-1775. Coincidentally beginning his trade around the time his father John had left the trade it is believed John died around 1763. With the rumblings of revolt in the air Henry made his way to Albany in 1775 where he practiced his craft until 1783 when the Revolutionary War concluded. After this he returned to New York City and continued in the business as pewterer until 1793. After this it appears pewtering was not a mainstay for him..
This tankard measures 6 1/8” tall to the top of the lid and 7” tall to top of thumbpiece. This example is well marked with Henry’s hall marks on the inside bottom. Lathe turning marks are present there although faded. The exterior of the tankard is in fine condition. The back of the handle has a few shallow spots from age. There are some small prick marks on the inside and outside bottom where someone had pushed down with a pointed object.
He also made domed lidded tankards, Some of Henry’s flat lid and domed lidded tankards have crenate lips on the lid. It is interesting that the English stopped producing flat lid tankard shortly after the end of the 17th century while American pewterers produced them up to the end of the 18th century. A fine example
of a Revolutionary Era, American Pewter Tankard.
