British Pewter > Teapots, Coffeepots, Pitchers & Sugar Bowls
A Drum Shaped Export Pewter Teapot by Edgar Curtis & Co.
Edgar Curtis & Co. worked in Bristol England from 1793 until 1801. Curtis & Co. apparently had a significant export market to the United States as various styles of teapots mugs tankards and flatware are found here. Of note as is typical of many Bristol pewterers their hollowware is made of a fairly high-quality metal. Their flatware on the other hand has a fair amount of lead in the alloy. Surprisingly, the lead in the alloy seems to prevent a good deal of corrosion to these pieces.
This teapot is in very good plus condition. The touch is well struck on the inside bottom. The design is typical of Federal Era drum teapots with a straight spout. This pot has a metal handle whereas most London teapots of this design and period have wood handles. This also retains its original green dyed Ivory finial button
An attractive piece of Export Pewter. The teapot measures 5 3/4 “ tall the overall length is 10“. Of interest is the “blind hinge” on the lid. This hinge is made up of three parts that act as a toggle and close up making the hinge unseen.
Price: $475
