A Pewter Tablespoon by Sarah Rowley - SOLD

A Pewter Tablespoon by Sarah Rowley

This pewter tablespoon measures 7 5/8" long. It is made in the typical 18th century fashion with the outside of the bowl being scraped and the inside well burnished.

Sarah Rowley was listing in the Birmingham Directory in 1793 as a "spoon maker". Over the years we have been lucky enough to have had several of her spoons.

This spoon has an excellent "as struck" touchmark and shows wear. The scrape marks on the back still show though they have "softened" from years of use. The back of the bowl near the handle has very attractive raised cast decoration.

For the substantial number of spoons made during the 18th century few survive as they were not highly thought of.
