Thomas Boardman began his training in Hartford, CT with his uncle Edward Danforth until Edward's death in 1799. Boardman continued his apprenticeship with another uncle, Samuel Danforth until he went on his own in July of 1804.
This flagon is made in the same molds as those produced by Samuel Danforth. In fact it is likely some of the flagons marked by Samuel may have been made by Thomas Boardman when he worked with his uncle. It is important to note the Hartford saw tooth border mark was used by his uncle Samuel.
This flagon would date from Boardman's earliest working dates circa 1804-1815.
This spire flagon has no spout in the tradition of many of the English Export spire flagons sent to New England in the 18th century. This flagon stands 12 1/4" tall to the top of the lid. It is in very fine condition inside and out.
Also of interest: this flagon is the exact flagon pictured in Laughlin's Pewter in America Volume I plate XXXIV figure 229.
