A Communion Set with a New Hampshire History - SOLD
This communion set is a combination of English Export and American Pewter and was used in the Free Will Baptist Church in Weare, New Hampshire.
The 12 3/4" tall flagon is marked by Robert Bush, Jr. and dates from the 1790's until the early 1800's. Of interest: the lid is constructed by using a large tankard lid for the lower portion. A portion of a late design pear-shaped teapot lid was attached to the upper dome of the double-dome tankard lid. The arrows in the photo below of the inside of the lid show where the upper dome of the tankard lid was trimmed away, revealing the inside of the teapot lid.
The pair of double bellied chalice are of a type thought for years to be American due to the quantity that had been found in New England. As they are always unmarked many collectors felt they originated here. A flagon nearly identical to the one in this set utilized a lid from the same mold as the base of these chalices. This placed these chalices as having been made in Robert Bush's Shop. The are 6 3/4" tall. The opening of the cup is 4 3/8" in diameter.
The pair of unmarked 10 3/4" plates are from the shop of Israel Trask, Beverly, MA. 1813-1856. They have knurled decoration on the rim and interesting incised decoration in the well of the plate.
This set descended in the family of the last minister of the church.
Intact communion sets of this period are rarely offered for sale. This set is in fine condition showing little wear.
