A Fine Single Reed Rim Pewter Plate by William Danforth
William Danforth was the fifth Son of Thomas Danforth II of Middletown, Connecticut. William worked from around 1788 when he and Jonathan likely took over the shop when Joseph Danforth Sr. died.
There is ample evidence that both Jonathan and William used Joseph’s Rampant Lion in Gateway touch after he passed. Somewhere around 1791 and 1794 William obtained his eagle die. Over the years this die was “recut” either due to wear or damage. The first variant had dots rather than stars and the eagle’s left wing was markedly under the eagle’s beak. The next variation the dots became stars, and in the final version, the upper portion of the eagle’s left wing has narrowed. This 7 7/8” plate is marked with the second die variation.
This plate is generally in fine condition. There are some light pits on the rim and some etch stains in the well of the plate. All the lathe marks show clearly on the face. The back of the plate is virtually mint with two very strong impressions of the eagle touch. The lathe marks are very strong with a miniscule number of scratches. A super example of a William Danforth plate with the second die variation.
