A Very Scarce 9 1/8" Pewter Basin from Thomas Danforth II's Shop
Spectacular 9 1/8” Pewter Basin from the Shop of Thomas Danforth II, Middletown, Connecticut 1755-1782. The striking pattern of the touches on this basin place it squarely in TD II’s production.
Thomas II struck his plates on the back with a double strike of his Lion in Gateway touch over his large hallmarks, or a double strike of the TI waisted lion in oval over the hallmarks. The TI touch originally was likely for a partnership between TDII and his brother John.
This basin is double struck on the back with the TD lion in circle touch over the small hallmarks. I once had an identical size basin marked in the same manner by Joseph 1779-88. Note the lathe marks on the back of the rim and bottom of basin.
This basin is in nearly new condition also it is the first TDII basin of this size I have ever had. It would be nearly impossible to find an example in finer condition.
A prize in any collection of Middletown Danforth pewter. (ON HOLD)
