A Pair of Pewter Plates by Robert Palethorp. Jr.

A pair of 8 3/8” pewter plates by Robert Palethorp, Jr. Philadelphia 1817-22. These plates are struck with the serrated eagle touch. This die originally had a substantial border with Palethorp’s name and Philadelphia. The die apparently began to deteriorate around the outer portions and the name and city were ground off creating an oval touch with and outer ring, this too deteriorated until the edge had serrations filed in resulting in the touches seen here.

These plates are in fine condition they have seen use and there are light knife marks on the face surface. The lathe marks show clearly on the face of the rim and the entire back of both plates. One rim is smooth as the bead is completely turned off whereas, the other still has portions of the bead showing.
