A Pewter Plate by Joseph Danforth Sr. - SOLD
Joseph Danforth Sr. took over the Middletown Shop after the death of his father, Thomas Danforth II. Joseph operated the shop from 1782 until his untimely death at the age of 30. He began working as a journeyman in 1779.
Joseph followed the quality of work produced by his father and he also followed the mark striking pattern used by him with two strikes of the lion in gateway mark slightly canted in a "V" pattern followed by the use of his hallmarks centered below the lion marks.
Joseph's Lion-in-Gateway mark was used apparently by William and Jonathan for a time after Joseph's death. Plates are found with the Lion-in-Gateway mark struck twice with no hallmarks.
This pattern of the impressions on some of those follow the striking pattern found on flatware marked by William Danforth.
This 7 7/8" single reed rim plate is in fine condition with the lightest distress on the face surface. The back of the plate is superb with mint "as struck" touchmarks.
The back of the rim has some nice chatter marks.
