A New England Pear Form Teapot by J B Woodbury
A pear form teapot by J B Woodbury. He is believed to have worked in Beverly, Massachusetts from 1830-35 and Philadelphia from 1835-38. His eagle touch with stars appears identical to Roswell Gleason’s eagle touch. The only difference being the name. It is unquestionable that the same die cutter produced both touches. It is likely the die cutter had a hub with the eagle and stars which were struck into the metal that would become the die. Into this die they would engrave the pewterer’s name, thus completing the touch,
This pot is in original condition, there are some minor dents and abrasions. This teapot has not been cleaned and it retains, I believe, the original paint on the handle. The pot measures 7 1/8” tall to the top of the finial. The touchmark is a perfect impression. A very attractive example of an early 19th century New England pear form teapot..
