This quart pewter mug was made in Middletown, CT and is marked with Joseph Danforth's initial touchmark.
Joseph worked in Middletown from 1780 until his death in 1788. After his death his brother, William, took over the shop. Anecdotal evidence indicates that William continued to use his dead brother's touches for a period of time until he had his own die engraved.
As this mug does not have the lion in circle touchmark struck on the inside bottom, it is possible this mug was made by William circa 1788-1793.
Note the bold curve of the bud terminal handle. This type of Danforth handle has the feel of an early 18th century English handle of the type found on mugs by makers like William Eddon.
Measuring 5 7/8" tall to the top of the lip in very good plus condition with a fine "as struck" mark.
