A 3” diameter pewter sundial marked NM.. In the Pewter Collectors’ Club Bulletin Volume 11 Number 10, Andrew Turano wrote a lengthy article about Josiah Miller and the Miller family of mold makers. This sundial has cast initials NM on the face near the lower end of the gnomon. Dr Turano listed a number of possible owners of these initials but seemed to come up short with a definitive answer as to whom these sundials were made by.
He did believe the they belonged to one of the Millers or possibly Millards. That having been said, this sundial is likely 18th century and is in very good as found condition. Sundials were sometime set on window sills where the sun was conducive to their use. They also were used outside set on posts hence the weathered surface. Someone wrote in nail polish about an article in the PCCA bulletin as well as some collection numbers on the bottom.
