When Thomas Danforth II died in 1782, his estate inventory listed in his shop inventory, a mold for salts as well as salts for sale.
Salts of this exact shape and size were thought by collectors to always be English in origin. However, several examples of this exact salt have been found marked with Thomas Danforth's crown "X" mark.
This particular example is unmarked, however it is from the Danforth mold and shows typical turning characteristics of the Danforth shop.
In very fine condition with little distress to the inside of the cup. The interior of many salts are pitted considerably from the corrosive nature of salt.
A truly rare and desirable mid 18th century piece of Connecticut pewter. 2 3/8" top dia.
