A Wondderful Footed Export Pewter Pear Form Teapot by Samuel Ellis - SOLD

A Wondderful Footed Export Pewter Pear Form Teapot by Samuel Ellis

Wonderful Footed Pear Form Export Pewter Teapot by Samuel Ellis of London. Ellis worked from 1721-1765 when he “retired to the country” as described in a letter to a Boston merchant in correspondence with the firm of Robert and Thomas Porteous.

This teapot is on three cabriole legs and has a wood handle and button. Both the handle and button are restored and copied for period examples found on teapots by Ellis. The pot is in near fine condition on the exterior, the interior does have pitting. The mark is fine. The pot measures 6 3/8” tall to the top of the finial.

Ellis had a considerable export market primarily to New England. His wares include all types of flatware, mugs and tankards both taper-sided and tulip form, pear form teapots in various sizes both with and without feet, and flagons. All of his production was pre-Revolutionary. A very attractive form not often encountered.
